Picture Purr-fect: The Tail of a Melbourne Cat Photographer. Getting Your Cat Ready for Their Professional Photo Session

Cats make incredible subjects for professional photography and I've pointed my lens at countless whiskers and toe beans as a pet photographer. While many pet photographers run for the hills when cat clients call, I've embraced the feline chaos!

My secret advantage? I have used my photography multiple times for fundraising creating beautiful coffee table books for a well known Victorian cat shelter, which means I've become fluent in Meow and expert in The Art of the Pspsps. My cat portfolio is basically a catalog of cattitude.

Lexi, Pedro and Ollie - three of the cats featured in Happy Tails which is the second fundraising coffee table book I created for Ingrid's Haven Cat Shelter.

Some of my models are natural-born celebrities – camera-ready the moment I arrive, posing like they're auditioning for Cat Vogue. Others? Total scaredy cats who treat my camera like it's a vacuum cleaner in disguise. These sessions typically involve me army-crawling across the floor making ridiculous noises while dangling toys like my dignity depends on it (it does). Others require ninja-level preparation –  the zoom lens that weighs more than the cat, the feline paparazzi tool of choice. I've mastered the art with camera settings pre-configured for the fleeting three-second window when a skittish tabby might dare peek around a corner or before my subject vanishes under the bed.

These stealth missions involve me channeling my inner wildlife photographer: "And here we observe the rare domestic scaredy-cat in its natural habitat. Please maintain absolute silence..."

Whether I'm photographing a confident chonk or a skittish shadow-dweller, one thing remains true: cats are calling the shots. I'm just the human with the expensive equipment they occasionally decide to acknowledge.

And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way!

Prepping Your Cat for Their Photo Session

Preparing your feline friend for their moment in the spotlight requires some special considerations. Here's a few tips to ensure your cat is ready for their close-up!

Timing Is Everything

The session should be scheduled during your cat's most active and alert hours. For many cats, this is early morning or late afternoon/early evening. Avoid any time right after meals when they're likely to be sleepy or uninterested.

Grooming for Glamour

Give your cat a gentle brushing the day before the shoot. For long-haired breeds, consider a professional grooming appointment a few days prior, however if this is not possible, a good brushing will suffice.

Clean their eyes with a soft, damp cloth to remove any discharge.

The Power of Play

Tire your cat out with play about 30 minutes before the session starts, then let them rest briefly. This creates the perfect balance of alertness without hyperactivity.

The Familiar

  • Utilising their favorite toys (especially those that make noise to capture attention)

  • Treats they absolutely cannot resist

  • Having their pet parent close by can help with anxiety

Create a Calm Environment

I allow up to 90 minutes for each pet photo session. As a stranger to your cat, this extended time helps build trust and comfort. The session unfolds at your cat's pace—never rushed.

I prioritize a quiet, peaceful atmosphere with minimal distractions. No sudden movements, loud noises, or unfamiliar people. This approach helps even the most cautious cats gradually relax in front of the camera.

Your cat's comfort is my priority—a relaxed cat makes for authentic, beautiful portraits that truly capture their personality.

The Secret Weapon: Sound

The sound of a treat bag opening or some cat-specific sounds on a phone – birds chirping, mice squeaking can be magical for capturing that perfect alert expression!

Final Thoughts

Remember that professional photographers who specialize in cats understand that cats operate on their own timeline. The best photos often happen in the unplanned moments, so relax and enjoy watching your feline friend shine!
